D.C. Spring Romance Engagement Session

Cheri and Brent’s love story began in May 2015 when an ordinary lunch hour turned into an extraordinary love connection.  “On a lovely spring day, I spontaneously decided to take my staff to lunch and we sat outside on a patio overlooking the Potomac River at National Harbor, MD,” recalled Brent.  Cheri who was living in Florida at the time was in Washington visiting family and she just so happened to be having lunch with her mother and sister at the same restaurant where Brent was having lunch with is colleagues. Brent saw Cheri and her family walk through the restaurant toward the patio and they ended up sitting at the table next him.  “After finishing lunch, I stopped by Cheri’s table on my way toward the exit and we made arrangements to meet for lunch,” said Brent. “The rest, as they say, is history!” Check out their romantic D.C. shoot captured by Kanayo Adibe

Proposal Story:

When Cheri and I met, she lived in Florida. Cheri is a native Washingtonian, but was attending the University of Florida for her residency. At the time, I was living and working in the DC area. We are both avid sports fans, so many of our initial outings were trips to sporting events. We celebrated 2016 New year by attending the Citrus Bowl where the University of Michigan competed against the University of Florida(I’m a Michigan alumnus). We met in Denver for the 2016 AFC Championship Game (Cheri is a Peyton fan, I’m a Brady fan). This past fall, my parents, Cheri and I attended the Michigan Football home opener and, later, Cheri and I went back to Ann Arbor for Michigan’s homecoming game. Naturally, Cheri is a Wizards fan, but her favorite NBA team is the Oklahoma City Thunder. When I saw that the Thunder were playing at the Verizon Center the day before Valentine’s Day, I knew it would be a great opportunity for me to propose to Cheri in a special way. With a little help from a friend, I arranged to have our family and friends attend the game in a suite. My mom even traveled from Michigan to witness the occasion! Cheri and I watched the game from behind the Wizards bench. At halftime, Cheri and I went to visit the suite under the guise that we were visiting my brother in his company’s executive suite. Our family was expecting that they would witness a proposal in the stands during the game. When we entered the suite, to the surprise of everyone, I dropped to a knee and asked Cheri to be my wife. Cheri’s niece and nephew made signs that read “WE WANT AN UNCLE!” and “PLEASE SAY YES!” She was surprised and emotional, but answered with, “Of course!”

For the Groom: Walk us through the behind the scenes of creating this special day

The best part of planning the engagement was including our friends and family. Cheri’s sister helped me pick the right ring.  My mom flew in town for the occasion. I couldn’t risk having to show the ring at security, so my boss brought the ring to the game in a safe! My brother helped finesse the suite story and passed the ring to me before Cheri could suspect anything.

What was the theme of your shoot?

When we planned our engagement shoot, we were looking for scenic, photogenic locations.  Washington, DC is filled with options that fit that category.  We chose Rock Creek park because of it’s large, beautiful bridges.  We chose the Kennedy Center because of its regal architecture and it’s surroundings-the Potomac River, Georgetown, Roosevelt Island, Arlington, and the sunset!

Were there any memorable moments during the shoot?

When we first started, Kanayo had us on the ground for some shots near the flowers.  I (Cheri) was wearing white jeans.  I was so concerned that my jeans would get stained.  When I stood up, I asked Brent if my jeans were ok.  He nodded and said yes.  We had a great shoot and I never gave the jeans a second thought. Later, after the shoot was over, Brent turns to me and says, “Baby, you had a stain on your jeans.”  I smiled and said “you know me so well.”  I’m so glad he knew what to do.  Brent saved the shoot!

What are you most looking forward to about your wedding?

Cheri and I are celibate so…yeah, lol.

Have you started planning your wedding?

Our wedding planning is in full swing thanks to our planner Brandon.  We decided on a short engagement, 8 months, so we started planning right away.

Congratulations to the happy couple! We wish you a wonderful wedding and marriage!
