Vintage Glam Florida Engagement Session

Florenn and Jacob first met over 10 years ago while attending the same church, but it wasn’t until Florenn moved away to attend The University of South Florida in Tampa that their love story began to develop. Jacob remained in contact with Florenn through text message and Facebook, though Florenn didn’t think much of it initially. But after a few months, Florenn started to see Jacob more than a “friend.” During that time Jacob visited her college and took her out on romantic dates to persuade her to see him differently. They eventually became best friends, and soon love flourished. Three years later and they’re still the best of friends who are madly in love with each other. Check out how Floreen and Jacob are celebrating their upcoming nuptials in this vintage engagement shoot in Tampa, Florida, captured by Ashley Canay Photography.

Proposal Story:

Jacob proposed to me on Christmas night in 2016. Marriage was something we spoke about and I knew that a proposal would be coming soon, but he caught me off guard that night.  We usually go home to Miami for the holidays, but for this year we both decided to stay up in Tampa where we were living at the time. This was the first time we were far away from family on Christmas, so I figured Jacob and I would just go to a nice dinner at an elegant restaurant or go look at some Christmas lights somewhere around town. Jacob never told me where he made the reservations, he just told me he was taking care of it. So, when we walked up to the Tampa Riverwalk, I just thought we’d be eating at a waterfront restaurant. He then told me that he forgot to place the parking ticket on his car so I just sat on a bench waiting for him, and that’s when I was greeted by one of our friends, who is now my wedding planner, holding a notebook which he made for me filled with all the characteristics he loves about me. I always thought that when Jacob would propose to me, it would be low scale, with just the two of us, somewhere private and secluded. Something simple, but sweet. I would’ve have ever thought that my closest friends would be there, with love songs serenading me in the background, followed by a table filled with presents. My friends formed an aisle that led out to the boardwalk, and there were strangers all around us listening in to hear my answer. The boardwalk had candles on the floor, and the candles led to Jacob on one knee. I was truly surprised, I felt like I was in a scene straight out of a romantic comedy, and I loved it. The whole night was just magical, and it’s a story that I will share with our kids one day.

For the Groom: Walk us through the behind the scenes of creating this special day.

In the three years that I’ve spent with Florenn, I knew that she was the soulmate I longed for. Going through with it and creating that special proposal day was a dream come true. It took a lot of planning with the help of our wonderful friends and family who gave us so much support and encouragement. Honestly, I’m really looking forward to that moment at the altar when we look at each other and become one.

What makes your love special?

Our love is special because Jacob is truly my best friend, and I am his.  We became friends first, and because of that we truly enjoy each other’s company. We talk about everything and have fun. We have opposite personalities, but we still bring out the best in each other.

What was the theme of your shoot?

We were going for a rustic look with a touch of glam. I am a girlie girl who likes to dress it up, and Jacob is more laid back, so this setting worked out perfectly for us.

Were there any memorable moments during the shoot?

Jacob and I are not big on PDA, so I knew this shoot would be a struggle for me, but it was actually really fun. Our photographer was pretty cool, and all of our awkward moments were just us busting out in laughter. Gawkily smiling at each other made our photos greater.

What are you most looking forward to about your wedding?

Florenn: I love Jacob, and I’m looking forward to waking up every day with my best friend.

Jacob: To walk hand-in-hand through life with my one and only.

Congratulations to the happy couple! We wish you a wonderful wedding and marriage.
