How to Choose the best MUA for your wedding day

If you’re like me, you’ve been wondering who your wedding makeup artist will be for a long time (although you may not be engaged just yet – and possibly still single)! But that’s neither here nor there – let’s stay focused. I don’t know about you, but how my face looks is definitely a big deal.

When I started my makeup career, YouTube didn’t exist so needless to say neither did Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest and hence there weren’t so many “makeup artists” to choose from either. Today, the internet is flooded with “beat faces” and “on fleek brows.” So who do you turn to when it’s your turn to choose a reputable makeup artist who is sure to add to your fabulousness on thee most important day of your life? – No pressure!

As a makeup artist with a bit of an inside scoop, I’m going to share some tips with you on How to Choose the Best MUA for Your Wedding Day. Just keep in mind, I didn’t say it was going to be easy.

1. First things first

You’re the bride, hence, the decision maker. The first thing you need to decide is what type of look you’re going for. Now, don’t confuse this with “the look” of your wedding day but rather the style and feel you want to have for your bridal makeup. Is it vintage, glamorous, natural and soft, bold with color, sophisticated, or something else? Once you have a general idea of what you want to look like you can begin looking for an artist who complements your style.

2. Do your homework

3. Quality over quantity

4. Seeing is believing

I strongly recommend an MUA who has a professional, well designed website with quality images of his/her work (on previous clients). First, a decent website usually says they take their work seriously enough to have one. But more importantly, photos of clients shows what they can do on different facial features and complexions. Steer clear of artists who have a “portfolio” consisting of selfies! Hopefully they’ve also gone a step further and provided reviews from clients or a link where you can access them on a site such as Facebook, Yelp, or Wedding Wire.

5. Take referrals with a grain of salt

6. Pretty is as pretty does

One last thing to consider is your MUA’s appearance. If they’ll be photographed while you’re getting your makeup done you may want to make sure they look presentable. A true professional understands the importance of looking neat and polished at all times. This is the beauty industry after all!

Now that you’re armed with some handy advice, I wish you the best of luck in finding a phenomenal makeup artist for your special day!
