Cathy's Hair Tips By Cathy Howse
Q. When I blow-dry my hair, small amounts of hair strands are falling in the sink. Is this something that I should be worried about?
A. I define breakage as stress breakage and severe breakage. Stress breakage occurs when you comb or brush your hair. This is an inevitable consequence because you are pulling on the hair. Severe breakage is indicated when you find lots of little hairs all over the sink, all over your clothes and all over the floor when you comb your hair. When you have severe breakage, yes you should be worried. I recommend you stop it by doing a protein treatment.
Q. Every hairdresser tells me that my ends are split or badly damaged, and insist that they cannot style my hair with split ends, and that they must trim them. I don't want them to trim my ends because I am trying to grow my hair, and every time a hairdresser trims my ends, they trim too much. My hair hasn't grown past my neck and collarbone in years. It has been the same length since I started college in 2000. How can I improve my ends so that stylists will not insist on cutting them off, so that my hair can grow properly?
A. The way to improve your ends would be to put an immediate stop to doing all the damaging hair care practices. One reason the ends break is due to over-processing with too much heat. The hand held blow-dryer will not only cause your ends to split, it will destroy the hair cuticle (the outer protective layer of the hair), causing the hair to split in the middle of the hairshaft, causing the hair to break and fall off your head. This happens so often that one might be inclined to believe the hair is not growing, when in actuality it is breaking as fast as it is growing. Too much heat close to the hair cuticle destroys it. Keep the ends moisturized and avoid excessive heat and you will be more successful keeping them on your head to add length.
In a lot of cases, the hair does not need to be trimmed. A hairdresser informed me that they are taught in beauty school to get as much money out of the client's pocket when they sit down in the chair! Trimming your hair is another service they can charge for. If your hair is not bothering you and you do not want your hair trimmed, put a stop to the foolishness. You have a voice! The hairdresser works for you and if you do not want your hair trimmed, you DO NOT have to have it trimmed. Split ends will not stop your hair from growing - that is a myth perpetuated by the hair care industry. Don't patronize an establishment that does not respect YOUR wishes!
