Music Sets the Tone
Avoid the Wedding Day Blues

(FeatureSource) Long after the flowers have wilted and the food has been consumed, guests will remember how much fun they had at your wedding reception. And music is one of the things your guests will remember most.

If the music was good, they will recall having a wonderful time. If it was too loud, they may associate your special day with a pounding headache. If the music was bland, they may not remember much about your wedding day at all.

"Music helps set the tone and style of your wedding celebration," says Judith Ann Graham, author of "My Bride Guide" (Barricade Books,
www.MyWeddingMyWay.com). "Research music that is
meaningful, so your wedding is special. Too many weddings and receptions are 'cookie cutters' that lack a personal touch or memorable moment."

Music, readings, poems and cultural customs provide an opportunity for the bride and groom to express themselves. Don't be afraid to incorporate them into your day.

"My Bride Guide" provides these eight tips to help you avoid sour notes during your wedding reception:

1. List your favorite songs.

2. Research your sources for a qualified band, orchestra or DJ. Get references and check them out with your local Better Business Bureau.

3. Meet with the booking agent, bandleader or DJ before you sign a contract. Determine how many musicians will be present, request particular performers if you consider it important, and ask about breaks, set-up time, overtime and special requirements. Ask about food breaks and who or what will play during them.

4. Can the band play special requests and certain ethnic music? Show the musicians your list of favorites and be sure they know those songs.

5. Make a list of songs. Be specific about which tunes you want played for your first dance, the bride's dance with her father and the groom's dance with his mother. Be specific about the cake-cutting music and the garter- and bouquet-tossing music. Decide
what your last dance will be.

6. Be sure the musicians you hire are familiar with your
reception site. If not, have them visit the site beforehand. For the reception, ask them to dress according to your wedding style.

7. Decide if you want the bandleader or DJ to formally
introduce you and your wedding party. Do you want
announcements made throughout your reception?

8. Be prepared to pay a 50 percent deposit. Get in writing the details of the musicians' performance. If the band you hired is not the band you get, renegotiate the fee before you pay your balance.

These tips apply to any wedding reception, not just extravagant ones. Even if you opt for an intimate gathering, set the right tone with music that's special to you. Make your day memorable for you and your guests.
