Real Weddings {Brooklyn}: Tamika & Maurice! – Blackbride.com

Tamika and Maurice met as freshmen over 20 years ago in 1989 at the High School of Graphic Communication Arts in New York City. Even though the two spent four years at the same school together and shared mutual classes, they really didn't interact much and hung out in different circles. Years later the two former classmates connected again and this time would be much different. "We lost touch after graduating, but after more than a decade later, we were reacquainted. A fellow class mate of ours suggested we become friends on Facebook in 2008. After e-mailing each other using Facebook a few times, he sent me his cell phone number in a message and asked me to call him. The rest is history," said Tamika. The two classmates turned soul mates, celebrated their union with a "Spread Love, It’s the Brooklyn Way," themed wedding at the Greenpoint Loft in Brooklyn, NY. Check out their special day beautifully coordinated by Camille Plummer of JunePlumm Events and captured by photographer Justin Ifill-Forbes.

Engagement story :

It was Christmas morning and Maurice placed a wrapped ring sized box on our bed. I didn't want to get too excited or hype myself up to be let down if it wasn't a ring. So I opened the box, trying to keep my composure and guess what…it was a watch. A very pretty watch, but a watch. I thanked him for the watch and went to the kitchen to make breakfast for our daughter. When I walked into the living room, there was yet another ring sized box, this time on the living room table. Again, I didn't want to get too excited in fear that he may have brought me matching earrings or something. I slowly opened the box, flipped open the cover and saw the ring. I started crying immediately. By then, he was on one knee. I was sobbing so much, I didn't exactly hear all that he said. So he reiterated for me. He said how he thought we had started something beautiful and the only thing that was missing was God’s blessing. Then he asked if I’d be his wife. I hugged him tightly and answered yes.

From the Bride:

I was a mixed bag of emotions on my wedding day. After months and months of planning every little detail with Camille Plummer of Juneplumm Events, I was elated to see how beautiful everything came together. I was anxious and couldn't wait to walk down the aisle to become Mrs. Tamika Linton-Jones. I was slightly sad because both my Mother and Grandmother, whom I was extremely close to, were not physically present to witness me walk down the aisle. But I knew they were there in spirit. When I heard the song Dangerously in Love begin to play while the doors to the loft opened, I saw him standing there with the officiant. Each step closer to him eased my fears and I was truly happy.

From the Groom:

I wasn't nervous at all on our wedding day. I knew that I had made the right choice, and now it was time to cement the deal. When I saw Tamika in her wedding dress, I knew that every time I laid eyes on her I would fall in love all over again.

What makes your love special?

When we initially started dating, our former Creative Writing classmates thought we were the most unlikely couple. But dating and spending time with one another showed us that we weren't as different as we thought we were. During that lapse of time that we lost contact with one another, we both ran across some bad apples. We know all that went wrong in our past relationships and we make an effort not to make those same mistakes. We work on our communication skills and make an effort to always consider one another's needs.

 Wedding song:

Our wedding song was Always by Atlantic Starr. We loved the lyrics and having both a male and female vocalist singing represented how we felt about each other from both of our perspectives.

Favorite wedding detail:

I absolutely loved the wedding venue. The day I visited it, I knew that would be the place. It had exposed brick, raw wood and natural light that flowed through a skylight. I also loved all the mirrors that were used throughout the wedding in various ways; as table numbers, as a ceremony program, as a remembrance mirror for those who were with us in spirit, even as a table top for my sweetheart table. And even though he didn't want any elements of his job included on our big day, our metro card inspired escort cards were a big hit!

What are you most looking forward to as a married couple?

We’re looking forward to having longevity and following in the footsteps of his parents who recently celebrated over 20 years of marriage. We also look forward to raising our two little girls together in a loving and nurturing home.

Advice for a Bride/Groom on their wedding day:

My advice to the couple would be to make sure they take the time to actually enjoy their day. To relish in the joy of the moment. Don’t get bent out of shape if something should go wrong, because it could. I’d also suggest maybe not even answering your phone and getting inundated with questions regarding the wedding, ie location, or the seating chart. Perhaps hand the phone over to a bridesmaid or the maid/matron of honor and have her intercept your calls .

Congrats to the newlyweds Tamika and Maurice! We wish you many more years of wedded bliss.
